Madhya Pradesh is the "Heart of
India" as it is located in the centre of the country and also because
it has been home to the cultural heritage of Hindhuism, Buddhism, Jainism
and Islam. Multitude of monuments, exquisitely carved temples, stupas, forts
and palaces adorn the State. The natural beauty of Madhya Pradesh is equally
varied as it has a large dominating plateau, spectacular mountain ranges,
meandering rivers and miles & miles of thick forests offering a unique
and exciting panorama of wildlife in blooming surroundings.
The magnificent paintings and other archaeological discoveries made in rock
shelters and caves at Bhimbetka, illustrate the continuity of settlement for
over half a million years. Ujjain with historic palaces, Sanchi with ancient
Buddhist monuments, Gwalior with beautiful forts, Khajuraho with beautiful
temples and Bhopal the lake side capital city are the main tourist centres.
The state has many cities visited for their charm and grace and some of them
are Indore, Khajuraho, Gwalior and Orchha.
Indore : Indore , the largest city
in the state, derives its name from the 18th century Indreshwar temple and
is situated on the banks of the rivers Sarasvati and Khan. There are
numerous monuments associated with the Holkars in the city which pull the
visitors from all parts of the globe.
Khajuraho : It is known as the City
of Temples and has the largest collection of ancient temples each
ornamented with innumerable sculptures of grace and tenderness.
Gwalior : This is a city with
remarkable historical importance reflected in the various mesmerising
monuments it houses. This ancient city ensures a great holiday for all.
Orchha : This is the city which is
identified with the beautiful monuments and temples from the Bundela period
and thus it can be stated that it has been frozen in time with stone.
