Maharashtra, one of the most
industrialized states of India, occupies the western and central parts of
the country and extends over the Sahyadri mountains; a vast stretch of 720
kilometers of the Arabian sea coast providing it a beautiful backdrop.
Located in the northern center of peninsular India, Maharashtra is
surrounded by the Arabian sea in the west, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh on the
north, Madhya Pradesh in the east and Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on the
south. The state extends between the latitudes 15.6° North and 22.1°
North and longitudes 72.6° East and 80.9° East.
Much of the state consists of the high Deccan plateau, which is separated
from the straight Konkan coastline by 'Ghats'. The Ghats are a succession of
steep hills, periodically bisected by narrow roads, and which are often
crowded by medieval forts and are home to the state's hill stations.
Aurangabad : Named after
Aurangzeb this city has number of attractions including the Ajanta and
Ellora caves.
Lonavala : A small hill station
stationed very close to cities like Mumbai and Pune is characterised by lush
green hills, enchanting valleys and cascading waterfalls.
Mumbai : The city is the commercial
capital of the country, base for the Indian cinema and much more. The city
owns splendid monuments, lovely beaches, renowned temples to make a vacation
memorable.
Nagpur : The city is situated on
the banks of the river Nag and is known for its Oranges. The city owns
thick teak plantations and is noted for its greenery and natural beauty.
Nasik : Situated about 200 kms. from
Mumbai, Nasik stands on the banks of the holy river Godavari. It is also the
site for the triennial Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years. It is known for best
quality Grapes. Temples and ghats on the banks of Godavari have made Nashik
one of the holiest places for Hindus all over the World.
Pune : This city is the cultural head
of the state of Maharashtra. The places of interest for the tourists are Lal
Deval, Bund Garden, Osho Ashram, Shindyanchi Chhatri and Pataleshwar Cave
Temple.
Shirdi : This is a small town in
the state very close to Mumbai known because of the shrine of Sai Baba which
attracts devotees from all over the country.
